In response to her outburst, Jun reaches over and grasps the doll’s shoulders firmly, looking her in the eye. “Shinku,” he resolutely tells the emotionally and physically shattered Maiden, “I don’t see you as lacking anything. If you did need something ... I would try to fill that void [Shinku] somehow.”

Whoa! ... this is a tremendous turning point in the story, equivalent to the many “confessions” in other series, such as Syaoran’s celebrated moment at the end of Chapter 69. While not as eyecatching as other images from “the scene,” this is an immensely significant moment that I watched patiently to come on the market for many months.

This moment was designed on two layers, as Jun and Shinku move independently. The image above digitally combines the two roughs. The thumbs add an interesting preliminary sketch planning out the way the action in this cut would work, and a fine “shuusei no shuusei” (revision of the revision) that makes Jun’s expression even more powerful.

Caution! Fussy Notes

The featured sketches are distinctively different from others from this episode. It is probable that they are the work of Masaru Kitao, who was Ishii's assistant on this episode.

Kitao's earlier work on Cardcaptor Sakura can be seen in several sketches in that area, notably this one of Fujitaka Kinomoto and this one of Sakura herself. He later became much better known as character designer and chief animation director for the huge 2006-07 success Death Note.

The unusual presence of a “shuusei no shuusei” in this set (likely Ishii’s response to his assistant’s work) supports this idea.
