This engaging cel is labeled “16A-290,” placing it in Episode 16, the first installment of the two-part version of Andersen’s very first published fairy tale, “The Tinder-Box.” This story involves a bold soldier who (much like Aladdin) is asked by a witch to enter an underground treasure trove to retrieve a magical object. One room is full of copper money, which the soldier eagerly pockets, but the second room makes him even more eager, as it is full of silver money. This cel shows the bold and tricksy soldier looking over the wealth he’s about to gather up. Sequence number: A1

Ah, but don’t waste too much time, good soldier, for the third room is bound to be full of gold money. And Mushi’s witch is no pushover (unlike Andersen’s tale) but is going to fly after you on the skull of a firebreathing dragon until you turn over that magical tinder-box to her.
