Featured in one of Hans Christian Andersen’s best known children’s tales, this poor waif is shown vainly trying to sell her matches on a bitter cold New Year’s Eve. The story has been a favorite for animators, and it has been adapted at least six times by Japanese studios beginning with Toei Doga’s 1968 movie feature Andersen Monogatari Match Uri no Shōjo. A second version brought Mushi Studio’s 1971 landmark TV series Andersen Monogatari to an end.

This cel, however, comes from Madhouse’s long-running series Manga Sekai Mukashi Banashi (Folktales from Around the World), which ran in 127 installments (typically two tales per episode) from October 1976 to March 1979. This adaptation appeared as the second half of show #12, aired on December 23, 1976, about the time of year when the events described in the story would have happened.

Akio Sugino was the episode’s animation director; this artist started out in the 1960s with Mushi Studio, working on the influential Astro Boy and Jungle Emperor Leo (aka “Kimba the White Lion “) series. Sugino also provided character design for Ashita no Joe (1970+) and Aim for the Ace! (1973+).

The non-matching background, labeled only “191” in the lower left corner, came with the cel and suits it well. It includes touches of airbrushing around some of the stars and in the halo around the street lamp.
