Cut 177. Shōko wants to help with making Hiro’s birthday cake. Sadly, her enthusiasm isn’t matched by her culinary experience, so she fouls up every task she’s given. Karada is kind but forthright in setting her right: here she’s explaining that you don’t melt butter by dumping it into a pot of boiling water. Shōko’s embarrassment at having wasted a quarter pound of good butter is, amusingly, balanced by the visible effort that it takes her to understand that you have to put it in a separate pan, then dip the bottom of this pan into the hot water, and use it like a double boiler to melt the butter.
It’s a funny moment, as Karada, for all her lack of experience with cakes, really is something of a domestic chef who does everything the gourmet way. (Sensei would just put it in a glass bowl and stick it in the microwave for 15 seconds. But maybe Shōko’s kitchen doesn’t have a microwave.) So there are several layers of incongruity here: poor Shōko is being put in her place for having done something childlike, and yet at the same time it is her apartment’s kitchen (and her boyfriend too, as we’re reminded several times).
Again the genga, which catches Shōko’s wonderfully complex reaction, is featured. (That’s Karada’s shoulder on the left.) The thumbs add the much less successful layout (Shōko looks irritated and a little blasé there) and Ikuko Itō’s very fine shuusei genga that discovered the right balance of innocent embarrassment.
The sketch set also preserved this cute storyboard version, which (as in other sketch sets from this series) was blown up and mounted on a sheet of layout paper as a starting point for the animators.
