This lovely portrait of the world-skipping amnesiac but unsinkable female lead of this series came up unexpectedly on eBay, part of a small batch of rough gengas. It is likely to be a clean-up drawing, as a close look at the pencil sketches shows that they are made up of shorter strokes than usual, suggesting that the artist was tracing and refining an even rougher drawing. It is, however, an engaging image, with the eyes especially well done. The character design for Princess Sakura was drawn unapologetically from the CLAMP/Madhouse classic Cardcaptor Sakura, along with that of her sidekick, Syaoran, now an archaeologist and martial arts specialist. You can see the trademark twin strands of hair twisting down from either ear. Yet this character, in some indefinable way, really does seem like an adult version of the middle-school character anime fans came to know in the 90s.
