Episode 37 (Revive, Hikaru's Sword!). In the previous episode, we've just seen Fuu defeat Asuka in an archery contest. By the terms of the match, Fuu has won her freedom, but now her captor says she’s not going to honor the promise after all. In this, the opening scene of this episode, she uses her magic to create and fire a zillion poisoned razor-sharp daggers at her.
So why is Fuu smiling?
Because now she knows it's Mahou Shoujo Time, and she's about to cast "Wind of Protection" and make all those wimpy little daggers drop to the ground. Then this magical girl's ready to do some really wicked wind attacks!

This is a beautiful sequence of sketches that Snakeskii and I collaborated to win against some pretty stubborn Japanese bidders. No wonder: it’s such a nice set that we could divide them up half-and-half and each still have a coherent and impressive series of gengas. Follow this link to see the A2 in her collection (her mean side comes out here), and leave both windows open, so you can follow this amazing genga set all the way through.
Two animation artists took credit for this episode's animation direction. One was Madoka Hirayama (平山円), one of the most prolific animation directors of the second series. The other was Shinobu Nishioka [西岡 忍], his first credit for episode animation direction. (He supervised animation for two later MKR episodes and contributed to the Rayearth OAV.)
It is unclear how the two collaborated, but Hirayama seems to have worked on on yellow paper and sketched with a finer point. I believe the shuuseis in this set are Hirayama's work, including the A1 shuusei in the thumbnail; as usual with Studio CLAMP, it pays special attention to the eyes.
Edit (09/30/11): The original scan was so inadequate that I finally rescanned it on a better machine. Unfortunately, the new improved Rubberslug won't allow me to replace old scans with new ones, so I had to duplicate the old item as if it were a new addition.
