Here is Maron in her transformed identity, the kamikaze kaitou Jeanne. This magical character is clearly patterned after the better-known St. Tail, who likewise steals valuable things in the name of good and justice. Both characters taunt the police by sending them advance notices of what they plan to steal and when, thus creating a game situation in which she uses magic and clever gymnastic tricks to outwit the traps they set for her.

She is, however, more than just a kaitou or clever thief, for the objects she targets are possessed by demons. In the odd scenario that develops, each object she obtains allows her to seal a demon into a chess piece, with which God can play a match with the Devil for ultimate control of the universe. That makes her a kamikaze or “Holy Ghost” kaitou. (Literally, kamikaze means “wind of God,” which in Hebrew means the same thing as “Holy Spirit.”)

This intense portrait, from Episode 14, shows Jeanne in a difficult confrontation and nicely shows off her costume, her winged pectoral cross, and the over-the-top watchspring hairdo that stays in place in the middle of every gymnastic move through divine intervention.
