We soon learn that Chiaki is likewise a magical kaitou named Sinbad, who uses diabolical magic to transform and slip the treasures Jeanne seeks out from under her fingers. He too transforms the sealed demons into chess pieces, the implication being that he more he snags, the more Satan will gain the edge in the world-ending match with God.
This rough sketch from the ending of Ep. 11, in which the baddie both outwits and disses the heroine, nicely captures the character's essence. Amusingly, Sinbad obviously still looks just like Chiaki, but the “disguise” manages to mislead Maron/Jeanne for most of the series, and Deduction Queen Miyako for nearly all of it.
