As the cut continues, the monk suddenly senses the truth: the bug has been planted in the cat’s bell around Natsuki’s neck. As the camera tracks back, we see him pointing an accusing finger at the device.

This is another of the Hiroshi Hara roughs that I find engaging in their broad, colorful strokes. Even in this early stage, Natsuki’s face and figure have solid contours and expressive personality. Notice how the sketch was begun very roughly with a nearly fluorescent purple pencil, then quickly filled in with graphite and orange pencil (for the shadows). Nice.
The thumbs show the much simpler and less revealing layout (by storyboard artist Issei Kume?) and an interesting conceptual sketch that clarified the implied position of the characters in the little alcove. (There evidently was some discussion of whether Natsuki was in front of the criss-cross screen or behind it.)
