The original background from the previous item is interesting enough to share on its own. It was not the standard 360 x 255 size, but much squarer: only 310 mm wide. A strip of brown paper was carefully pasted on all sides to protect the edges. I thought it had been trimmed by a previous owner, but the brush marks on the back suggest that the sheet was this size when it was painted.
Notice the window that was hidden by Umi with the layers in place. At first I thought that the background had been damaged by contact with this cel. But on a closer look, the yellow and white dabbling is part of the painter’s work. I’m not sure what this was supposed to represent: perhaps a reflection of the toxic bubbles entering the room in front of Clef and Umi.
