Episode 12: cut 58. They soon meet Tetsu, who refuses to believe that the grown woman he has met is really Karada-chan. Before leaving on his endless quest for the child he still hopes to find, he tells the two where they can find “Sato-san,” the new domestic at the B&B. Hiro turns to follow his directions, but Shōko stops him with this intense stare. (We soon learn that she wants him to follow Tetsu and try to explain to him what has really happened.)

The genga is a fine portrait of the two, especially Shōko’s oversized spectacles and butterfly hair bows, and Hiro’s stylish “one-eyed” hairstyle that makes him look like YukItō Kunisaki in AIR. The thumbs add the rather vague layout and Masahiro Fujii’s fine rough sketch (see the “Yoroshiku onegaishimasu” to the right of Shōko’s bag).

Caution! Fussy Notes

This relatively simple cut was worked out with the studio’s usual care. The sketch pack included:

  • the storyboard image blown up and mounted on a piece of layout stock, plus an original layout (first thumb),
  • two genzu on darker-green paper with schematic images of Hiro’s start pose and Shōko‘s mouth layers.
  • a rough on light-salmon paper
  • a partial pre-genga shuusei on light-green paper (just of Hiro’s hair)
  • three gengas, one (the start key) of both characters, and two showing Hiro’s turn toward Shōko
  • two post-genga shuusei on light-salmon paper
  • six dougas: an A1 END of Shōko and five of Hiro.
