In the next vignette, Raphael is standing on a shady side street, looking up and down for his wayward mentor. Sequence numbers: B1 (Mikael), an unnumbered BOOK layer (the railing across the street), and A1 END (the bicycle parked behind it). As with the line of cars in the Cut 59 background, the studio gave the cycle a little added “punch” by having it painted on a cel rather than on the background.
Nevertheless, the painted background is a very strong piece of landscape art, with a lot of depth. The road and line of houses behind Mikael’s head provide a strong visual composition, drawing one’s eyes past the puzzled novice, up the street, and around by way of the trees against the sky, and back to that fey parked bicycle. The muted colors of this scene also provide a moment of relief from the brighter scenes that surround it, showing spots bathed in bright morning sunlight.
All TnN backgrounds are more complicated than they seem from watching the series, and this one is unusually so. I appreciate the willingness of Rummy’s Cels to take an offer on this and its sequence-buddy, which I’d ogled and envied for many months.
