Step 15: Something That’s Too Far to Reach, cut 23. Raphael has gained a little extra snuggle time with his pupil by turning his alarm off. Mikael, realizing he’s about to be late for school, leaps up, hurriedly puts on his clothes, and dashes off. His mentor stays behind on the futon, giggling with his face in the pillow (B1 alternating with B2). Then he starts to look up (the B3, seen here) and comments, with a not-very-celestial smirk, “I like this gig!”
As you’d expect, cels from this roguish moment are widely held in RS galleries: blink and you missed it has this cel’s immediate sequence-buddy, the B4, CHX has the B9, and Drakonia’s Cel Lair has the B12, while Gecko Blue Cels has another one, and go-go-romeo! has yet another one. Also, debtbaka’s obsession has a wonderful set of gengas (and the roughs too) that planned out this cut..
I’ve suggested Hael’s futon with a piece of art paper, which made the cel very happy and ready to go back and have a long morning nap after you finish looking at him.
SENSEI CHECK!
One rather unsettling thing about this cut is that it was planned to show off the long, gaping scar on Raphael’s bare back, which is normally hidden by the jacket he usually wears. His missing wing has been physically ripped off! How or why poor Hael-san lost that wing is never explained in the story, and so this scene, however playful it seems at first, fleetingly suggests some underlying trauma that returns, from time to time, to haunt this complex character.
Hmmm . . . Like someone else in this series . . .
