Entering the room, the princess encounters an eerie old woman, who promises to teach her the haunting melody she was playing on the harp if she’ll help her spin. Briar Rose, never having seen a spinning wheel, innocently asks the crone to teach her. And so, the witch (for such she is) blesses her wicked good luck and virtually harpoons the girl’s right hand with the maleficent spindle. Here we see the startled princess begin to raise her injured hand to her mouth, then at once droop as the magical curse takes effect. Sequence number: A8 (key).

I too blessed my wicked fortune when this set-up came onto the market: a crucial moment in one of the most important episodes of this influential classic anime series. It’s hard to imagine either Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura without their “Sleeping Beauty” narrative foundations. This lot came with Yasuji Mori’s original layout, which matches the labeling on the background (cut 201) and confirms that it is the original matching production item. Sadly, the background has also suffered significant mold damage during its long storage. Still, the center section (presumably protected by the cel and its bag) remains vibrant enough to show off the quality of the art work.
