The emotion could be fright, but I don’t think very much scares a yūrei . From the eye and overall posture, I think it’s more likely that he’s angry: Kitarō looks more ready to step forward into action than back. And he can actually fire some of his spiky hair at his opponents, rather like an angry porcupine. Sequence number: A1.

In this cel you get a good look at his customary outfit, which looks like a gray-blue set of pajamas, long-sleeves on top but shorts on the bottom, with what looks like a bumblebee-striped scarf secured with a bright red ribbon. Wikipedia says this is actually a “magic chanchanko vest” (it does wrap around the back) which has a personality of its own. So it’s no surprise that the stripes can be wavy, or zig-zagged (as here), or straight across (as in the next cel), depending on the gravity of the situation.

The production background seems to fit the context and colors well, but actually comes from CCS.

Previous: Give me back my scarf! Next: Kitarō and Nezumi-otako are captured
