Episode 2: Comparative Classification of the Modern Youth Through Consumption and Entertainment, Cut 36. In this episode, the main characters of the story split into two groups to go shopping in Tokyo, and the story cuts back and forth between the two trips. Here we are with one group, Saki-chan and Kōsaka, the handsome student with whom she’s infatuated. They visit Harajuku, a shopping district of Tokyo focusing on clothing designed for young people, and Saki is having an enjoyable time looking for new fashions.

Above is a pretty layout, done on white paper and labeled “4” in a series. The first thumb shows a photocopy of the first in this series (the others, mostly partials, aren’t imaged). See the second thumb for the corresponding rough. Significantly, it’s much far impressive as a drawing than the ones done on either white or green paper for Episode 1, and so I’m certain that these are the work of another, less experienced animator.

Doing a quick check on ANN shows that the animation director for this episode, Akatsuki Koshiishi, was in fact a relative newcomer, doing only his third project and his first as sakkan. The artist credited for the storyboards (who is the person who would draw the layouts as well) was indeed a much more experienced artist, Kazuhiro Furuhashi, whose credits include, among a lengthy resume, directing Getbackers, Le Chevalier d”Eon, and Rurouni Kenshin.

Mmmmmmm....
