Scene 3, cut 18. Then the comforting image of Chiaki morphs into the sinister Sinbad standing over her like the Big Bad Wolf in a dark woods . (And . . . y’know . . . now that you think about it . . . they really do look exactly the same.)
Her stunned reaction is to back away from him, little by little, and this long series of keys shows her doing this by stages. An interesting feature is that while the gengas and the dougas were drawn at regular size, in fact the studio ordered a tight close-up of her face, using only a portion of the art at about 4x enlargement.
That of course meant that the sketchwork had to be flawless to look good under this close examination, and so the genga is truly gemlike in execution. I’ve imaged it above exactly as directed by the indications on the sketch, with a fuller scan of the sheet in the first thumbnail to show how extreme the enlargement was. The second thumb shows a copy layout showing that this close-up was not a last-moment change but was part of the studio’s plan from the start.
