Scene 3, cut 21. This fantasy sequence culminates in this seemingly infinite replay of the kiss Sinbad gave Jeanne at the end of Episode 16 (see my gallery devoted to this fine adventure).

It stays on the screen a full 12 seconds, an eternity in anime. (It’s actually just about nearly 1% of the total screen time of the entire episode!). We see the two, embraced together, partially silhouetted by the rising full moon, their hair and robes fluttering dramatically in the breeze, while the camera very, very, very slowly tracks back to a long shot.

This is the genga, scanned at about actual size to show the detail. See the thumbnail for the copy layout, which shows how the details of the rising full moon and the slow track-back were planned out.

It would have been the simplest thing for the studio to reprise the footage already created for Ep. 16, where we see the big kiss from exactly the same perspective. But ... no ... if you look at the screen cap from Ep. 16 below, you’ll see that they were animated differently in many subtle ways. (Notice, for instance, that she has a different leg in front in each cap.)

Trust Toei to do things the right way, not the easy way.

“Oooo . . . smooch city!” as the irreverent stuffed tiger Hobbes would say.
