Based on a manga by Narumi Kakinouchi, this story was adapted by AIC into a 4-episode OAV (1988-89), with Kakinouchi (a prolific animator) doing the storyboards, character design, and animation directing. AIC remade it in 1997-98 as a 26-episode TV series, with Kakinouchi again contributing character design and scripts and her husband, Toshihiro Hirano directing and contributing storyboards.
Cels from both versions are extraordinarily beautiful, and I was a longtime lurking admirer of this series’ lovely art, even before I realized that Hirano was the director responsible for both the TV and OAV versions of Magic Knight Rayearth, another series with arrestingly lovely animation.
