Cut 988. As the Hunters are trying to escape with Palme, they are mobbed by a group of these mysterious worm-like creatures who are trying to liberate one of their fellows who has been captured and strapped into the craft. Here the leader is telling one of the company to kill the captive bola so the others will leave them alone. Sequence number: A18

Yep, that’s right: one layer, with a lot of animation tricks, some added during filming, others (like the touches of airbrushing that make the lantern-like object behind the captive bola look properly translucent) already present in the two-dimensional image you see here. I had to buy this oversized (395 x 265) cel to get another in the same lot that I really wanted, but I found it interesting enough to display. The use of foreshortening to make the bolas look both massive and flexible is especially impressive, as is the dramatic use of harsh lighting around the craft’s “lantern.”

(No, I have no idea why the Hunters had the bola covered up and belted into their craft, nor does Nakamura spend time explaining this. They do seem to be associated with memories, though, so I’d guess that maybe a captured bola was harnessed as a kind of living GPS, which would be essential in the desert wildernesses where the Hunters roam.)
