Episode 12: Osaka Rhapsody, cut 90. This little guy that’s attracted Natsuki’s kittenish instincts is one of the tiny beings that we see in the ammo shop that Sakura visits in Osaka. Their job is to coat the armor-piercing bullets that Sakura likes to use with pure mithril. Anyhow, while her partner is haggling with the owner over a new revolver, Natsuki can't help pestering these little guys with their David-the-Gnome character designs. Most of them get away, but this one gets batted about for a while in a short bank.
SENSEI CHECK!
The first part of a two-part adventure, this episode describes the adventures of the bounty hunters who have been hired to escort a strange monk to carry out an important ceremony, and the efforts of the baddies to ambush them. It was directed by Atsushi Takada, another of the regulars for the series: he also directed the opening episode, as well as numbers 4, 9, 12, 16, and 19.
Interestingly, Takada was less active than the others, though he worked (as did many of the other HP animators) on Pierrot’s next major project, Fancy Lala. His sole important assignment after this was episode director for the 2004 magical girl series Gakuen Alice. The rather whimsical genzu in the thumbnail is likely by Animation Director Kazuo Takigawa, a versatile artist who also worked on the Ah My Goddess movie, Dragon Ball Z, Full Metal Alchemist, and One Piece. Takigawa was also animation director for Episode 38 of Inuyasha, which Dylan Acres notes was marked by playful moods and expressive faces.
