Cut 279. To sabotage Mikael’s quest,Silky rips out the pages of the Book of Chaos, an object that represents Mikael’s internal preparation for his transformation. So as the Book is destroyed, Mikael simultaneously feels agony, as if his soul is being torn apart at the same time. In this cel, toward the start of this cut, you can see him holding both sides of his head as if to keep it from bursting.
This cel and the next were painted as substantially oversized images (10 ¾ x 12 ¾), perhaps planning for some special effect; oddly, they were simply filmed close-up, and so from the broadcast image (see screencap below) you’d never realize that Mikael’s entire face was painted for this moment.
