Cut 13. Watanuke figures if they won’t explain what the box is, he’ll find out by opening it himself. As the cut progresses, though, he finds that this is easier said than done.

This and the other two sets of sketches had two series, one on slightly wider paper and simply numbered 1, 2, 3, etc. The sheets were Studio Gonzo layout paper, flipped over and used on the back. I interpret these as first-level practice sketches (or “genzu”). The ones on Production I.G. paper are still not finished images, but I interpret them as “rough layouts,” as they do have the keyframe layers and numbers indicated. They must be second-level sketches working up the “genzu” done on Gonzo paper.
Above is the “3” in the series of genzu, showing the most determined attempt Watanuke makes to get the chest open. See the thumbnail for the “2” where he starts to tug at the lid.
