This object shows up on the table of one of the minor characters early in the show, when Palme's quest to Tamas (the underworld) is being discussed. It's a globe, artfully designed to reflect the odd features of the world in which this story is set. You can see here Arcana, the world in which most of the action takes place, which is a mixture of desert and grassy world connected by rivers. Six massive pillars (you can see representations of five of these here) hold up a firmament called Touto that encases the world. This is represented here by a set of hexagonal tiles that form a kind of soccer-ball (or, more accurately, a bucky-ball) around Arcana. Finally, a piece can be removed from the Arcana layer to show Tamas, the underworld, where Palme and his followers eventually penetrate.

Does this sound complicated? It is, and only the liner notes that come with the DVD really clarify the issue. Keep in mind that Nakamura originally conceived this plot as a multi-episode TV series, where the details of the world could have been explained more thoroughly and reinforced. The movie, in this regard, suggests the result if J. R. R. Tolkien had been forced to rethink his epic Lord of the Rings in terms of a 160 minute film rather than a 3-volume novel.
