At the climax of this fairy tale, the Handsome Prince arrives and finds Briar Rose sleeping on a bed entwined with blooming red roses. "The prince was so amazed at her beauty that he bent over and kissed her," say the Brothers Grimm. But kissing in public is (as we know from the parallel scene in CCS) considered somewhat indelicate by Japanese.

So in this adaptation, the Prince muses out loud, "How shall I awaken her? Perhaps with a gentle kiss --" He leans over her and -- in one of this tale's clever moments -- does not succeed in touching her lips (rather like someone else cel collectors know and love). But he makes such a fuss as a result that Briar Rose opens her eyes in wonder, a blush infusing her cheeks.

... and all shall be well and
All manner of thing shall be well
When the tongues of flames are in-folded
Into the crowned knot of fire
And the fire and the rose are one.
-- T. S. Eliot

This musty-smelling cel obviously came from a dealer's neglected file in a damp cellar -- but it captures the magical way that this moment was realized by this series. The trace lines are remarkably strong given its age, or maybe Nippon Studio made trace lines of tougher stuff in the 80s. Anyhow, this magical lady certainly won't be neglected any more! Sequence numbers: A6 (Briar Rose), C6 (airbrushed blush).
