. . . or at least four of the five: from left to right, Tsukasa, Anri, Makoto, and Sasami, all in the battle costumes they wear when they practice their Craft. (At this point in the plot Misao has been enticed to leave the others and go by herself into the Witch world.) This image comes in during Episode 20 [The Maiden Of The Dawn] shortly after the previous sketch. Already surprised at Washu's change of heart, they are doubly surprised when Daimon follows her in from behind them, explaining what sort of magic each of the girls should practice.
While small, the images are detailed and clear enough to show each girl’s distinguishing trait: Tsukasa's winged headdress, Anri’s two side curls, which she protects in snoods, Makoto’s long twisting strands of hair, and Sasami’s trademark antenna-like trailing locks.
This image is what I call a “blue,” a very capable drawing first executed lightly in blue pencil, then, as with the figures of Tsukasa on the left and Sasami on the right, elaborated and made more detailed in a sharp black pencil. Given the quality, I’m assuming this and similar “blues” are executed by the series’ animation director (Shoji Hara), in the same way that “roughs” were done on thin yellow paper in the past.
This scene came on two sheets, with Anri and Makoto, the two middle girls, on a separate sheet of paper. I’ve digitally combined these to save space. Both sketches were done on narrow paper that was 27 x 20, then taped to another sheet with registration holes, with the final height only 22.5 mm.
