Episode 20: The Maiden Of The Dawn. Featured above is the first of three sketches showing the girls’ magical mentor, their cooking teacher Washu Kozuka. In this episode, she's looking more than usually stern, as she has finally overcome her scruples and entered the club room ready to teach the girls some real magic for a change. The book she's holding is presumably some basic tome on entry-level witchcraft (or else it's "How to Work Gastronomic Wonders with Eye of Newt").

SENSEI CHECK!

An interesting indication of the state of flux that animation art was experiencing at the time this series was produced is the diversity of paper sizes used in this lot. The sketch featured above, like the A2 and A3 gengas (not imaged) were done on nearly “standard” sized precut paper (27 x 24 mm.) But two other drawings in the same set, which cleaned up the A2 image, were done on stocks of “letterboxed” paper (29.5 x 21 mm.) Other letterboxed sheets that I obtained in the same batch vary somewhat in dimensions, from 29 to 30 mm. in width, and from 21 to 24 mm. in height.

Click the thumbnail for one of these letterboxed drawings, which has been cleaned up into something very close to a douga, though it lacks the shadows and highlights, plus the sequence number that a real douga would have. The details of Washu's collar obviously gave the animator trouble, as this and other sketches show.
