Step 17: Tying and Untying, cut 145. Mama, preoccupied by the letter she’s received, vacuums the entire house absent-mindedly until Ruka comes looking for the things that have mysteriously disappeared from her workshop. The vacuum self-destructs, and Ruka looks with horror at her lost tools, now scattered over the floor. Sequence numbers: A1 END (tools), B1 END (Ruka), C2 END (mouth layer).

This little cut, a short pan of the toolkit contents with Ruka’s horrified face superimposed inside a box, takes less than a second. So how many objects did Studio Pierrot have to design and paint on a cel to make its point? Would you believe more than fifty, ranging from a swarm of screws, nuts, washers, and tiny transistors to that hefty ball-peen hammer and green welding gun?

The two dougas are in the thumbnails, the one showing the tools being unusually detailed. Notice that the frame on the A1 douga is drawn at a jaunty angle from the way the sketch was originally drawn: this was evidently a late change by the studio to make the tools flow more smoothly under the Ruka image. If you go to "Private area" and type in "seemorestuff," you can move to the next items and get a closer view of all the animation work that went into this little scene.

Ruka (also transliterated "Lucca") was created by Ikue Ohtani [大谷 育江 ], best known as the immediately recognizable voice of Pikachu from Pokemon, heard even in the various English and other dubs. All the creature says, after all, is some variation of "Pi - ka pi - ka!" or, in moments of emotion, “Pi - ka - chu!” depending on the situation. And nobody ever had such an amazing variety of Pikachus as Ohtani. It’s therefore nice to learn that she had a much wider range as a voice actor, and the complex tomboy Ruka is one of her strongest creations. She was also well-known as the voice of Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, one of the regular sidekicks of Conan in the Detective Conan/Case Closed! saga and Tony Tony Chopper in the equally extensive One Piece saga.
