This sketch set covers cut 646 of the movie Genshomaden Saiyuki: Requiem, in which the villain Dougan summons up an clone of the monk Sanzo and prepares him to attack his counterpart. We first see the schemer, pea-sized in the middle of a great hall; then Bogus Sanzo appears to the right of the frame in the middle background. Later in the cut, both Dougan and Bogus Sanzo fade out and reappear, both closer to the viewer, with the clone now on the left and Dougan more visible in the center.
This is a lengthy, static scene, covering nine pages of timing sheet, with neither character moving a muscle except for their mouth layers. For this reason, the images had to be top-quality, as they remain before the viewer's eye for much longer than usual. The paper that I got in this sketch set shows evidence of the special care the studio spent with the images of the villain and his evil servant, and I've shared quite a number of the developmental sketches.
Above is the D1 genga, or foundation sketch, a detailed, well finished image. The first thumbnail combines two of the early-stage sketches, a very preliminary genzu, or planning sketch, done on thin pink paper, and the rather crude layout that makes Bogus Sanzo look irritated rather than insidious.
The second thumbnail shows the roughs, done in two stages like some other cuts I've obtained from Studio Pierrot shows. The yellow rough is the earlier and works on making Sanzo look less emotional. The green genga is the later, more polished draft, and that manages to hit on the right mix of sinister and zombie-like. The genga works up this idea in a sharp, workmanlike fashion ... and yet ...
