I think . . . when you hear someone say they like you,
. . . for the first time . . .
. . . then you can begin to like yourself.

I think . . . when someone accepts you,
. . . for the first time . . .
. . . you feel like you can . . . forgive yourself a little.

. . . You can begin to face your fears . . .

--Fruits Basket, Ch. 28.

Cut 126. Glomped by Noelle in midair, Silky at first resists her embrace; for a long time she stares blankly out at the audience, unable to comprehend what’s happening. Then, at this breathtaking moment, her eyes close slightly and her face brightens. She has experienced for the first time what it’s like to be genuinely accepted by someone else, and the insight transfigures her. Sequence number: A13.

This is one of those cels that got me in the solar plexus when I saw it come up for auction. The profound, expressive eyes and the near-smile in this rich, endlessly viewable portrait embody an intense moment of self-discovery: what it could mean to be liked . . . and to begin to like yourself . . . for the first time . . . as Yuki Sohma says in the great Furuba scene quoted above.

Other privileged curators include stacie (of Tictac’s Corner), who has the A7 (with Silky’s initially bewildered look), Otakusin, who has the A11 (showing the start of the change) and exCELsis, who has the gorgeous A12, this cel's immediate sequence-buddy. Another cel from nearby can be seen in Little Nestbook of Cels.
