Step 16 (Feelings that Cannot Be Answered), cut 263. This rather cryptic genga comes from close to the start of what must be described as an extraordinary cut. Natsumi, who missed a test due to illness, now has managed through the power of green onions to limp into school for her make-up. Unfortunately, she has to take it in the same room as Yuusuke and Noelle, both of whom flunked their tests.
Now she has to try to block out the random comments and activities of Noelle's entire family while writing her test, which becomes nearly impossible when Nekhbet, Baba's pet vulture, insists on roosting on her back.
The layouts begin with a closeup of Nekhbet's face, but the animators later decided to add two gengas before this, starting the cut with an even more intimate image of Nekhbet's crest feathers and face. This one (actually the second genga in the cut) is labeled Aロ [A-ro]. The thumbnail shows the Aイ [A-i] that precedes it.
SENSEI CHECK!
The vitality of this funny cut must be attributed to the episode's animation director, Taka Satō 佐藤陵], who supervised this episode (and also Step 9). This artist also worked on Inuyasha, but handled only three episodes in the first season (12, 17, and 23). Still, Dylan Acres, in the Rumic World Inuyasha Director Guide, rated her as one of his favorites. "Satō's art style looks quite natural and realistic," he says, "with a slightly less traditional anime style while not being completely unrecognizable. [Her] work has a very cinematic quality with lots of closeups and detailed facial expressions. It could be said that it has an OVA quality."
This "cinematic quality" might reflect the artist's extensive experience in movie anime. She served as an animation director in six of the Pokémon films as well as chief animation director for two of the Inazuma Eleven movies dealing with a feisty high-school soccer team. Most recently she was credited as chief animation director for the 2022 spoof Fantasy Bishoujo Juniku Ojisan to [Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout].
