Cut 20. Mikael, more and more fixated on achieving angel status, has gotten up early to study the Book of Chaos. Raphael, irritated at having been aroused at dawn (he presumably roosts on a line like a bird when he’s not between the sheets snuggling with his trainee), is twirling around and round by his toes, playfully twitting Kael about what he expects will happen when he gets his wings. Sequence number: C24 (key).

This is a delightful series of images, and so you can find several other cels from this cut in other galleries: Otakusin has an C9/D4/E3 set from an earlier cut showing Raph yawning, and from the cut where my cel comes in, Dreamy Anime has the C11, and Orangejason Cel Gallery has the C33. Confused Moogle's Pom-Pom Gallery also has a nice one. I like mine because Hael shows more of his wing when he’s twirling than he does at rest.
Interestingly, many collectors assume that Raphael is roosting outdoors on a telephone wire, and so they give him non-matching backgrounds of trees and sky. But in fact (as you can see from the screen cap) he’s inside Mikael’s room perched on the clothesline with the drapes tight closed so he doesn’t have to rise with the chickens. So instead I’ve given this a dark background that made the cel happier.
The lines look a little faded, but actually judging from the screen cap the tracing could never have been very strong, perhaps reinforcing the half-winged angel’s drowsy irritation.
