Ep. 18 (Age of cohabitation), cut 58: At the end of a hard day, Sakura parts company with Natsuki on the street and turns to go with a friendly wave. Although the two often rub each other the wrong way, it’s clear that they get to like each other by the end of the series. And Sakura does most things in an elegant way, and this short series shows it.

The first thumbnail shows the copy layout, and at the bottom you can see part of a stamp used by the episode director, Tatsuya Ishihara. This talented artist worked on Fushigi Yuugi and Tenchi Universe, then did impressive work as part of the Inuyasha team, including directing the famous episode 163 (The Secret Flower Garden).

Next to Ishihara's stamp is a little boxed initial used by the episode's animation director, Yasuhiro Takemoto, who worked closely with the director on later projects. He soon after shifted to the more prestigious role of series director, handling Ep. 68 of Inuyasha, and quickly compiled a strong record of work for the major Ishihara projects, doing storyboards, key animation, and episode animation direction for AIR, Clannad, Kanon, and Haruhi Suzumiya.

Takemoto was recognized for his directing work on major series such as Full Metal Panic (Fumoffu and Second Raid), Lucky Star, the 2014 success Amagi Brilliant Park, and, most recently Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (2017).

Tragically, Takemoto was killed in the the arson attack on Kyoto Animation’s production studio on July 18, 2019.

The copy layout shows the street scene populated by some generic passers-by. But click the second thumbnail for a delightful “omake.” In the end, these generic figures were turned into a cel layer giving a whimsical vignette of the Hyper Police universe, where a Mommy fox-spirit is carrying her groceries home, accompanied by her little girl, who’s shyly hanging on to her skirt. Passing her in the other direction is a silky, or seal-spirit. It’s little, nearly subliminal details like this that make Japanese anime such a delight.
