Cut 129. After some more images of rolling fire and smoke, the perspective shifts back to the oni, who at first is leaning left, expecting to see the intruder reduced to cinders.

Then, as the smoke clears, he leans back, visibly shocked to see that Hakudōshi has not been harmed in the slightest. We also notice that Entei’s head droops a bit; then he looks back at his rider, beginning to share Kagura’s scorn.

Featured is the very fine layout, roughly sketched in pink colored pencil, then artfully refined in fine daps of graphite. It is a very fine portrait of both characters, but you can see from the screen caps that the pose and expressions shifted dramatically during production so that the two are looking more to one side rather than directly ahead. In the thumbs I add a very preliminary sketch that made this shift in pose, along with a more finished partial of Rengokuki alone in this new pose.
While I’ve replaced my other Ep. 142 gallery entries to present new and better scans of these sketches, I’ve kept this one, as it was for some time the single most popular item in my anime gallery, attaining (as of October 2017) 7954 individual hits. That’s 2000 more than next-most-visited item and in fact over 5% of all the visits made to this gallery at that time. While Rengokuki has a short life as an Inuyasha character (barely half an episode) he must have a staunch admirer somewhere, and I hope this fan appreciates the long-overdue improvements being made in this part of my collection.
