Episode: 40 (Sakura and the Sakura in the Dream), cut 190: The animation director was evidently dissatisfied with the key animator’s genga (see first thumbnail) as he completely reworked the sketch. This is a shuusei (or correction genga), done on thin yellow paper like the rough and likely executed by the same person (animation director Hasebe).

How do you tell the difference between a rough genga and a shuusei genga? There are many subtle differences, but really the one sure way is to look at the the final production image. There the deep shadows behind Touya’s apron make the lighting starker and more ominous. That’s an idea that emerged only in the shuusei genga and shows how animation images continue to be refined and improved throughout the sketch process.

How do you do this? Well, you could examine the DVD frame-by-frame or else, if you're lucky, you can get hold of the actual painted cel (see next item).
