Cut 74: This is part of Alcyone’s final scene in the series, as Umi, Fuu, and Presea urge her to tell them where they can find the arch villain Debonaire. Here, Alcyone seems ready to reveal the secret as she faces the three others. "Lady Debonaire is ... " she begins, then her head drops, and she seems to shudder all over.
In two separate lots, I was lucky enough to get an interesting combination of layout sketches, rough animation sketches, and preliminary/shuusei gengas from this scene. The roughs and shuuseis are most likely the work of animation director Ishida. Some references suggest that the sakkan also draws the layouts. But the style of these is so distinctive (especially in the angular approach to the eyes) that I find this difficult to believe. It seems more likely that they are the work of the storyboard artist, in this case episode director Hitoyuki Matsui. However, not having an attested example of this artist's work, I'm reluctant to make a firm attribution.
In any case, this first set includes six original layouts for cut 74, representing the key images of the sequence. Shown above is the second layout, which includes all the characters and a rough schematic of the background. Since only Alcyone moves during this cut, the other layouts show only her form (or the curse that emerges during the scene).
The thumbnails take you to the first layout, scanned against the second to provide context, and to sakkan Ishida's shuusei layout that revises the images of the three onlookers.
