Episode: 66 (Sakura’s Most Beloved Person) Cut 18: From Meitantei Touya, the classic movie directed by Nakuru Akizuki. “Now I know the truth,” the Master Detective says, confronting his quarry at last. “So what is ‘the truth’,” the Mysterious Criminal counters obstinately. “I know now…” Touya continues, “what your secret identity is ... even if you yourself don’t know it!”
One of the most elegant rough gengas I’ve ever seen from CCS. See how those seemingly bottomless eyes emerge from the cloud of colorful pencil strokes that define Yukito’s hair and glasses. The note above Yuki's head reads "His mind is up here [big arrow up]." I assume this is the artist, animation director Hisashi Abe [阿部 恒], telling the gengaman to make Yuki look lost in his thoughts. Certainly reflecting on Touya's line seems to have made his consciousness fly far away.
This image is the middle layer of a deceptively simple cut with only three unchanging images: Touya, Yuki, and the background. In the final version, they all slide in different directions at different speeds (See the screen capture below that shows how this works) giving the effect of a world spinning around Yuki’s eyes.

This was Hisashi Abe’s only assignment as a CCS animation director during its TV run, but he was chosen to be the chief animation director for the second CCS Movie, The Sealed Card. He came to the task with considerable experience, including character design and animation direction for the 1995 Bakuretsu Hunter /Sorcerer Hunters. After CCS, he became character designer and chief animation director for Chobits (2002) and Devil May Cry (2007). Most recently he has served the same designing/directing roles for the successful TV series Kingdom (2020-??)
